Question:

Apartments in New York?

I am going to (hopefully) be moving to New York City within the next year from Michigan and I was wondering about the whole 'getting and apartment in New York" thing .. it is very different than here so I was just wondering. I have pretty poor credit. Not because I have collections or anything I just have a limited credit history and student loans out but I have lived in an apartment for the last 3 years. How is my poor credit score going to affect my getting an apartment ( I will probably be able to pay for 6-12 months up front) I will also not have a job when moving there... I will be getting one upon arriving with the ACS, but would not have had a a paycheck there yet. ... Basically I am just not sure about how to go about finding an apartment in NYC and where I should start looking? Any advice would be helpful.

  1. your best bet would be looking for adds in the paper or going through a real estate agent.you do know apt in ny are very expensive.you can not find one for under 1500 hundred dollars a month.

  2. In Manhattan, generally landlords will request you make 40 times the monthly rent in annual salary (for a $2,000/month apt, you should be making $80,000/year). If you can't prove you are or have been making that amount, you'll need to have a guarantor or pay for most of the rent up front. In boroughs outside Manhattan, landlords are usually less strict, and it's possible to work out some type of pre-payment agreement so that they're satisfied you won't be a problem tenant.

Take a look at these two sites to get an idea of what's available right now:

You can also have a broker help you with neighborhood choices, but the best option would be to visit the city and get a tour with some friends.
