Question:

Apartments in dallas...HELP!?

i'm about to leave to dallas in a few weeks to attend the art institute down there. i've never lived in a big city before, and i don't really like the 'school sponsored' housing - the falls at highpoint. i've seen bad reviews about drugs and gangs from that place, and considering the $2000/month cost, i'd expect something a little better than that. plus, my parents aren't really pleased with it. so, would anyone know where i could find a decent apartment around that area? i believe it's in east dallas (10-15 miles around northpark center mall). i'm looking for something around $2000 or less, but in a reliable neighborhood. safety is key here. i've looked up apartments on the internet, but i can't find anything around that area that hasn't had someone say there's crime. so please...help!

  1. I just moved away from that area.  I wouldn't live in downtown Dallas.  It's unfortunate that a city of that size hasn't been able to rejuvenate itself like many others.  But it's just old and crime is definitely a factor down there.  We lived in Allen, just north of Plano.  I think you'll find in general that it's nicer in the north part of the city.  The Highlands is where the money is, and that is immediately north, but a little north of that is affordable/safe/nice.  Try Carollton, Arlington, Richardson.

  2. You don't want to live in Allen.  It is really, really far from the Art Institute.  The one way to get there, 75, is constantly overcrowded and there are all kinds of wrecks.  So that 18 miles will end up taking hours.

The Art Institute is right across the freeway from Northpark Mall.  If you move to the east of the area, it isn't so great.  If you move to the west, it is ok.

A great option for you is The Village.  Lots of SMU students live in that area, and it isn't too far from AI, maybe three/four miles down back streets.  Also, the area is really affordable, and crime isn't too bad, especially since every place is gated.

Here are some of the places in The Village:

It is an ok area, close to lots of shops including Target, Central Market, World Market, close to Presbyterian Hospital and Medical City Dallas, and close to Greenville which is where all the young people hang out.

Check out those places.  Whatever apartment site you are looking for, search by zip 75206, and basically any one that says "Village" is right in that area.  Also check www.apartmentraings.com, most of these places got good ratings.

They aren't luxurious, but they're good for a moderately-priced apartment in a good area.

  3. Check out realtor.com and click on the RENTALS tab.  Or apartmentguide.com, or GOOGLE it.
