Appalachian State thinking about joining the FBS
The Appalachian State Mountaineers will be conducting a study to figure out whether or not the school is ready to join the Football Bowl Subdivision.
Appalachian State has been the strongest performer in the Football Championship Subdivision for the last ten years and believes that a move to the countries number one league could be beneficial.
The club is best known for their win over the Michigan Wolverines in 2007, but the university has been highly successful in the FCS for the last decade. Appalachian State has won three national championships over the past ten years, winning all three in
a row from 2005-07. In addition, the program has also won six-consecutive Southern Conference titles.
The recent success of their football program coupled with several schools in the FBS changing conferences next season, could make this the best time for the Mountaineers to make the jump to the nation’s upper echelon. The movement happening between conferences
next summer could open up a spot for the Mountaineers in a strong division. The Big 12 being reduced to 10 teams next season may mean Appalachian State could vie for a spot or the club could seek entrance into the WAC, where Boise State will no longer be a
member.
The school’s athletic director Charlie Cobb spoke about the possibility of moving up to the FBS, saying, “With the changing Division one landscape and the unprecedented success that our football program has enjoyed on and off the field in recent years, the
time is right to analyze all of our options as a Division one athletics department and football program.”
Appalachian State would certainly have the support, as they have led the FCS in attendance for the past three years and have averaged over 28,000 fans so far this season.
Appalachian State is currently 4-0 with a 2-0 record against conference opponents.
