  1. I know some of my high school teachers actually don't even try to fit in, because it wasn't long ago that they were in high school. They genuinely still like to talk gossip, like who likes who (if students like teachers, jeez), and celebrity stuff. My teachers are usually chill. If they're elementary, they try to be king/queen of the classroom. So they suck.

  2. some do

Most of my teachers don't but one young biology teacher has done it and still managed to keep us all adequately well behaved and had alot of respect.

she gossiped with all of us even and we knew that she was going out with our maths teacher before he left. so yes it can work but i have many other examples where it has failed and teacher just looks really weak.

  3. This is not true. I don't really care if my kids like me.

  4. Not at all.  I'm a teacher and that's the worst thing that you can do because then they see you as their 'mate' and not a figure of authority and help.

  5. I am a chemistry teacher.  I try to fit in with them insofar as I give them respect and consideration, but ultimately I am the authority in the room.  I work to gain their respect.  I do not believe respect for authority is automatic (I am contemptuous of many "superiors" who got there by trampling over other people), and must be earned.  I treat them as people who have opinions and strengths of their own, and I do not talk down to them.  It's not because I want them to like me, but because if the learning environment is a positive, supportive one, kids will be more motivated to learn.  It makes an otherwise dull subject a LOT more interesting.
