  1. Giving birthday presents is something that each family sets their own rules and guidelines to.  I am almost 50 and I get something every year from my parents.  I have 1 daughter and I know that I will recognize her birthday with a gift until the day I die.

My husbands family is different...they stop giving gifts when a person reaches the age of 21.  They believe that gift giving is for children not adults.

If a family is having trouble financially and cannot afford to buy a gift, this may be another issue.  I didn't have a lot of money to buy my daughter a gift this year so she got a small gift and a homemade cake.  She enjoyed it just as much!

  2. My daughter just turned 18 this year and we got her a gift card at Barnes & Noble. She also had a party at home with her friends. Your parents should give you something for your birthday. I feel that would be nice especially since you're their daughter. It doesn't matter if you have a job or not. I hope they give you something. Remember, it's the thought that counts. Happy Birthday!

  3. I would never "expect" anything from my mom.  But I know that she will always get a gift, even if it's little, for my birthday.

  4. I agree 18 is a special birthday, but on mine I sent my mum a bunch of red roses ( can't remember what I bought dad) to thank them both for all their support. I still give & recieve  birthday and xmas gifts & I'm 40.

  5. My parents still get me birthday gifts and I'm almost 30. It depends on your family and what traditions you have. I don't think it has anything to do with growing up and providing for yourself. But maybe your friend's parents just don't have the money.  Don't worry about what someone else's parents do, I think 18 is a big day and if yours are going to get you something then hooray!

  6. Do you do anything special for them on their anyversary or birthdays.

If no, they won't give you squad

  7. I think that as long as your parents can afford it...

They should still celebrate and give you things for your birthday...

You are just turning 18... I don't beleive that kids are adults until they are 21...

18 just says that you can purchase tobacco....

    =]

  8. It depends on the family I guess.  I still get gifts and Im 23.  However they dont go all out like they used to when I was younger.  My 18th was a big bday, and so was my 21st.  Now its a gift card or whatever.

  9. I think that as long as I'm able to, I'd like to give my son a gift for his birthday, whether he's 5 years old, 18, years old or 50 years old, lol

  10. No one is *supposed to* get anyone any gift at all.  Gifts are a choice that come from a desire to give someone something - not from a requirement or obligation.

  11. I am 31 and live with my hubby and our kids and have been out of my parents house since I was 18. I still get a gift from my MOM. My dad however, just calls and says HAPPY BIRTHDAY! which is fine with me.
