Question:

Appendicitis or ruptured ovarian cyst?

I've been having some discomfort/mild pain in my lower right abdomen for about nine days now. A few days ago I went to see my doctor and she didn't think it was appendicitis because it wasn't severe pain, I didn't seem to have rebound pain, etc. She sent me for blood work (came back normal) and an abdominal and pelvic ultrasound. The pelvic ultrasound showed what looked like some fluid, possibly from a ruptured ovarian cyst. The abdominal ultrasound came back OK, though they were unable to see my appendix.

I'm not getting worse, but I'm not getting better either ... I'm not in severe pain, vomiting, etc. so I feel like it would be silly to go to the ER. The doctor just said to wait to see if it gets better on its own and if not, call back on Monday (and obviously go to ER if it gets worse).

Is it possible to have appendicitis for more than a week and still not have really severe symptoms? Or does this sound pretty normal for a ruptured cyst on my right ovary? I don't want to overreact but I don't want to ignore it either.

  1. sounds like a cyst to me.  i had appendicitis and it was excruciating.  and besides the pain was right below my belly button....where your appendix is.  if it is to either side and lower then it is likely a cyst.  if so there is nothing you can do about it.  just wait for it to pass.  you get one every month and sometimes they burst.

  2. Listen to your doctor. It is possible that you may have an appendicitis.

  3. your rebound tenderness test is negative so you do not have any peritoinitis while Appendicitis often cause inflammation in peritoneum,so you do not have Appendicitis!
