Question:

Appendicitis question?

Last week, I went to the hospital for pain in my left abdomen and after ultrasounds and a CT scan, and their conclusion is that its likely irritable bowel syndrome. However, their initial diagnosis was appendicitis. I had not had any pain in my right abdomen, and after tapping on my stomach a few times, they said it was not serious enough to warrant surgery at that time. Ever since I've had occasional discomforts in the right abdomen, but would not go as far as calling it severe pain. Merely a really light, dull pain or discomfort. Should I go back and have them double check my appendix? I've been told if I need my appendix out, I'll "know", but haven't had serious pains I'd expect with needing an appendectomy.

  1. I'm confused as to why they changed their diagnosis from appendicitis to irrital bowel. I would definitely get my films from the hospital and see a surgeon for a second opinion.

  2. its probably just because you were thinking about it too much

omg omg the appendix is on the right side, what if i have appendicitis!

    you are probably just anxious

but if you are worried, go see your doctor, its worth rechecking

i had my appendix out last november and i can tell you this

you would know if you had appendicitis

the actual surgery isnt that bad, its the recovery that is painful

    i still havent fully recovered

  3. If you're concerned, don't ignore it.  When I had appendicitis, I had none of the usual symptoms -- all I had was pain in my upper-right abdomen that became more and more severe until it felt like a hot poker in my side.  Turns out my appendix was above where it "normally" is.

I had no nausea, no vomiting, no fever, but by the time I got to the hospital, about twelve hours after the pain began, my appendix was almost ready to burst.  My doctor, who I kept calling that day, told me it was nothing to worry about.  If I'd trusted him I might have died from a ruptured appendix.  Go with your gut (pun intended), and get a second opinion.

  4. Usually if the pain in your belly goes from a generalized discomfort to a right lower belly pain, that's a sign of appendicitis, as well as nausea, vomiting and fever.  If the pain in your belly is similar to what is was.has been since you  were checked, it could simply be your irritable bowel acting up.  Irritable bowel causes cramping and belly pain, due to increased movement of the bowel itself(if you have the diarrhea type) or decreased movement(if you have the constipating type).

    Good luck.
