Apple OSX internet activity icon?

Question

I switched to a Mac a few months ago and love it. However, I download a lot of music and movies and I would like it if I could monitor my internet traffic in either the menu bar or the dock so that I could tell, while working on something else, whether my computer was sending or receiving traffic. On a PC, there was that little icon with two computers that flashed blue when traffic was being sent or received. Is there anything like that on a Mac, which I can view no matter what program I'm in?

I don't know of an Icon that can show network activity, but there are a number of downloads at Apple's website that allow you to monitor network traffic.
