  1. tell them you would rather them not until they are checking references at the point they plan to hire you....  if you do not want your current employer to know you're out interviewing.

  2. it all depends if you want you current employer to know you are looking for another job. in my opinion don't do it unless you have spoken with your boss about the possibility that you may be leaving work. plus you can always write references available upon request.

  3. I do because I have been lied to by the best.. and I as the person responsible for there actions after being hired want to know every possible thing I can. I have total regard for small business owners as the inability to ascertain a true back ground is nearing extinction, and most college aged employees rarely have the ability to maintain actual results that they have lofty aspirations and zero discipline without constant supervision.

  4. No, unless you want your present employer to know you're looking for a new job.  Sometimes, if you're a valuable employee, that works in your favor as they may offer you a raise to try to get you to stay.  Sometimes, though, they may just decide to hire someone to replace you right away, rather than wait for you to leave, and if you don't find a new job right away you could find yourself out of work.

When you apply for jobs, tell them you don't want them to contact your present employer and they won't.  But then you'll need to have other references from previous jobs that they can contact.

  5. Depends where you are in the world, in the UK your previous employer cannot give you a bad reference, they can only state facts ie length of service etc.  I would ask them not to contact your previous employer unless they are offering you a job.
