You are always extracting with/from water.  So you don't use anything that is miscible with water.  (Extracting compounds from, say, coffee, is a different thing)  So you don't use acetone or alcohols.

Methylene chloride, ethyl ether, ethyl acetate, hexane, petroleum ether, chloroform, would be the most common.
