Applied Science University's burn Duhok in the clutch; Win 98-90 – FIBA Asia Champions Cup
On Saturday night, during the second classification game for the 5-8 place, Applied Science University of Jordan launched a ferocious assault late in the fourth quarter and knocked down Duhok of Iraq in a 98-90 thriller. The Jordanians
were trailing by 3 points with seven minutes remaining in the final buzzer when they made a startling comeback and clinched a comprehensive win.
Veteran Abbas Islam had an outstanding game with the ball as he notched up a game-high 32 points and clutched 14 boards to lead the Applied Science University. Osama Daghles also provided a massive support in a hardly fought meeting.
Daghles finished the game with 17 points and a game-high 12 assists.
The face of Iraqi team, Chester Jarell Giles posted yet another brilliant double-double. Giles racked up a team-high 24 points and gathered 10 rebounds but once again, the rest of the Iraqi team failed to pick up the slack and
Duhok lost.
The Applied Science University headed out aggressively in the first half of the game and never trailed before halftime. Small forward Enver Soobzokov lifted the momentum for the Jordanians early and buried three scorching blows
from downtown in the first quarter as ASU procured a massive 13 points lead at the end of the first 10 minutes.
Iraqis however showcased a brilliant fight back in the second quarter and went on a 22-9 run to tie the game 39-39. Jordan retaliated though and surged through with a number of buckets just before half time to construct a 7 point
lead.
Duhok once again picked up pace in the third quarter and managed to snatch the lead from the ASU on the back of a 26 point frame. Duhok took full control of the game in the preliminary minutes of the fourth quarter. However, in
the end it all fell apart for the Iraqis and they succumbed to an eight point win. Applied Science University will now take on the Syrian Champions Al Jalaa in the final classification game to confirm the 5th and 6th rank in the tournament.
