Applique for tote bag?

I can't find any bags I like for school for my books but I found an old canvas tote lying around the house that I can use but I would like to add to it. I was thinking some sort of applique like a huge smiley face or peace sign or music notes. Does anyone have any other ideas (symbols, designs, images) of what I could do for an applique? Or if anyone has any ideas other than an applique of ways to make it less boring. Thanks in advance for your help!

Applique and fabric paints are my choices. You can get some really good ideas from simple children's coloring books for the patterns. Most of the designs in them are large and simple so you can do almost anything with them, This includes lettering!!

I would do the iron on appliques using stitch witchery or something like that. Then outline using the fabric paints as in the puff paint or the wet look paint.

I do the little designs like sheep on my glucometer cases with fabric paints. The boring black cases are not really cool to carry around undecorated. And mine is on my belt when I leave the house.
