  1. There's usally a tool you need.

  2. You'll need some tools.

What kind will depend on the size and style of grommets you want to install.

For example, you can get punches made in various diameters to get the 'hole' cut into the fabric  (you'd need a hammer/mallet, and a cutting surface too).

Grommets come in many styles, and sizes... there are two basic approaches to installing them... one, is a type of 'plier' which would squeeze the grommet onto the fabric, the second, is a 'setting tool', or 'die'... you would place the fabric, (with the grommet in place), over the tool, and then strike the top portion of the tool, with a hammer.  You'd be using the hammer blow, instead of squeezing the handle of the 'plier' type.  The second method is used for larger grommets (easier on the hands, hehe).

Ive installed grommets on tarps, tents, and tool bags...its fairly easy to do.  Here is a link showing some of the basic tools - http://www.beaconfabric.com/vindex.html?...

You can find grommet tools at most fabric stores, craft stores, and even a few hardware stores, hehe.
