I have ties with my home country i.e. family house and property. Where should I apply? Ethiopia or Saudi Arabia? FYI, saudi law doesn't permit foreigners' property ownership and expect my family living there and bank statment i've no thing more 2 show as "tie" with the country. So, which place has a better promise of success?

  1. You apply from the country where you currently reside. If that's SA, then apply at the consulate there. I don't think it will matter where you assets are located, the purpose of seeing your assets is to determine your financial means so that they can be sure you will not become a burden on the government. So if the assets are in a country you don't reside, that probably would be irrelevant. Oh, if they were in Cuba it might matter, but that's about it.

On the other hand, you do want to show you have a tie that would keep you from overstaying your visa; but I think having your faimly and job in SA would be sufficient.

  2. It's really hard to say where you'd have a better chance of success. But since you're currently in Saudi Arabia and a permanent resident, you may as well apply there. Whatever ties you may have had once in Ethiopia, they've been largely weakened by your permanent residence in Saudi Arabia. After all, if your house and property don't keep you in Ethiopia, they aren't likely to keep you in Saudi Arabia either. So, assuming you've been accepted by a US university and now have an I-20, you may as well apply in Riyadh or Dhahran.
