  1. Your mom is right, establishing credit is very important to have to make almost every major purchase in your adult life, and without it, you'll find it's hard to buy anything worth having.

You should shop around.  Look at interest rates on the applications themselves, to decipher which is the best to go with, the lower the APR the better (usually)  If you're a shopper, go with a credit card that is available through the company you shop with the most, (like GAP or WalMart) they usually offer discounts if you use your card when making purchases.

And remember that just paying the interest on a card is not keeping up on your credit, you always want to pay your balances on time, so don't think of your card as a "Pay for it when you can" device.  Only purchase things you can afford.

  2. Stay away from credit cards. Credit cards are the financial worlds cigarette and "building credit" is the biggest joke of the 21st century,

All they are good for is getting into debt with.Just look at how they work. You have to borrow money and make payments on time to get a high score. You have to keep borrowing money and keep making payments on time to keep a high score. It's an "I Love Debt" score.

If you pay as you go. If you live on less money than you make. You will not have payments. You'll have money and not have to worship at the alter of the almighty fico score.
