Applying for a passport for travel to Mexico Aug. 5th?

I would like some information for those of you who have traveled to Mexico recently and did not have a passport. A special bill was passed on June 8th that allowed travelers -who had not yet received their passport - the ability to return from a list of countries if they had a receipt of their passport purchase.

My Questions: Did you have to order the expedited (costlier) method of delivery?

How long did it take from the time of the application until the copy of your receipt was available on the internet?

Just trying to see if a Honeymoon in Mexico starting August 5th will be feasible.

  1. Go to website below, read about the flexibility program, follow directions for it...do all this PRONTO!  Print out the forms and fill them out and get all your needed documents together BEFORE going to the post office to turn in your papers.  Even during NORMAl times, passports took 6 weeks to get...so the "flexibility" program right now is a real blessing for you!   This is all only if you are FLYING to MEXICO. If you are driving, you do not need passports.  Hope all works out well for you.

Just thought of something else...you could consider going to the American Virgin Islands or Puerto Rico..then you would not need a passport at all and not have to deal with all this in such a rush.

  2. You have to apply, and I would expedite it.  Go to the post office and talk to the people there.  They'll give you a receipt, and you'll be good to go!  Have fun!

  3. If you havent applied then you wont be able to get a receipt. Mine took 2 months to get online receipt. Its been since March and we still havent received our childrens passports.

  4. When I went to Mexico, you did not have to have a passport, only a birth certificate. If you are planning on getting your passport though, you will definitely want to have it expidited! You can receive your actual passport in a matter of only 2 weeks, but the cost is a little more. I just had my passport expidited and it cost a total of $189.50 ($127 to the US Dept. of State, and $62.50 to the USPS). You would probably need to get to work on this TODAY! Hope this helps! Have a wonderful honeymoon!!
