Question:

Applying for a visa to visit the US?

My mom in Vietnam would like to visit the US to see me, my husband and my newborn son. However, the person preparing her DS-156 messed it up. When it was time for her interview, the officer failed her. The consular officer simply said, how come on the application you stated that your daughter was paying for all the expenses and now I ask you and you said your ex-husband. I am sorry to inform you that your answer does not seem ligitimate and we have to fail you.

So now, I want to ask if I can file the DS-156 for her myself instead of hiring a translator back in Vietnam? What can be done DIFFERENT this time to make sure she pass the interview? She said she did not look at the form that the lady was preparing for her. That was why. She wants to try it a second time. It's going to break my heart if she does not get it this time. I want her to be able to see her grandson.

  1. The sad part is that the jerks handling visas are less than sympathetic. They could care less - their jobs are to keep people out.

Now, having said that, your mother didn't bother looking at the form huh? Maybe she will take the process a bit more seriously the second time around?

Why don't you fill out the form, since you are going to be making the arrangements. Send it to your mother, make sure she reads it, understands it, and won't mess up again. THen she can reapply - and hope. She still has to cope with the jerks!

  2. You may want to contact an expert within your        Vietnamese-American community who may have the experience in this matter; they may know tips you don't.

Based on what you just shared, you just have to make sure that the answers on paper match the answers you give verbally, so I'd talk to your mom and go over the form with her.
