I live in California but I am planning on going to school in New York. What are the procedures of applying to schools out of state? Should I request applications or should I apply online. Will it count if I apply online? I also want to take the ACT and SAT subject tests that are in october. Is that too late? For the ACT which one should I take? the one with the writing or no writing? Please help!!!!

  1. You can apply online or get the paper application (your guidance counselor should have a few copies). October is not too late (as long as you request on your application that collegeboard send the scores to the colleges you plan on applying to). Give 6 weeks between the test date and the college's application deadline for receipt of test scores.

  2. There's no special procedures for applying to an out-of-state school.  You should apply online just like any other student applying to that school would (unless you'd prefer a paper application for whatever reason).  October is not too late.  You should take the ACT with writing because a lot of colleges require that you take it with writing, so it's best to be prepared with the ACT that they want you to have taken.  (You should check with the specific school you're interested in to see if you should take the ACT with writing or not.  That kind of information should be on their website or at www.collegeboard.com if you search the college's name in the college search engine.)

Really, the only difference between applying to a school in-state and applying out-of-state is that when they ask for your address, put the state that you live in.
