Appointing Gabriel Landeskog is a very logical decision, says Colorado Avalanche’s Coach Joe Sacco
Gabriel Landeskog, a Swedish international ice hockey player, recently became the youngest captain ever in the history of NHL as he was appointed as the captain of Colorado Avalanche. This move surprised everybody but their head coach thinks that this was
the right decision and a very logical one.
Landeskog, the 19-year-old forward was brought in last year after being selected in the first round of the 2011 NHL Draft, from his native country Sweden’s Elitserien Hockey League side Djurgårdens IF.
Joe Sacco, the head coach of the Colorado Avalanche trusts in Landeskog’s leadership abilities and it looks logical to him to appoint the teenager as the captain as he said,
"To me, the logical choice kept coming back to Gabe. No. 1, his leadership ability comes very naturally. He doesn’t try to be somebody he’s not”.
According to Sacco the thing that would make the player such a good captain is that he has shown great composure and responsibility at the age of 18 and helped the team a lot by fulfilling all the requirements and doing anything that the team needed, as
he added,
“He demonstrated in his first year at 19 – he started at 18 – strong leadership both on and off the ice. His play on the ice certainly was an example of how we want all our players to play. He played in every situation possible for us”.
The Stockholm, Sweden native also assure that he will remain the same guy as he was before and would not change at all even after becoming the captain, which means that his behaviour and attitude will other players will remain same as it was before, as he
said,
It doesn’t change the way I play the game or how I conduct myself. I’m going to be wearing the ‘C’ on my jersey, but other than that I’m still the same guy”.
Becoming youngest captain in the NHL by breaking the record which was previously held by Sidney Crosby of Pittsburgh Penguins as he has become captain at the age of 19 years and 286 days where as Crosby was 19 years and 298 when he became captain.
