Hi

I am writing a 1500 words essay comparing and contrasting the cognitive and biological approaches to anxiety for my psychology degree course. I'm having such trouble! I can find info on both the approaches but not comparing/contrasting them!

Please help!

Thanks

  1. No - unfortunately that's the bit you have to do yourself.

So you have to discuss the underlying theories, the differences in perspective between biomedical and behavioural interpretations. Then you need to find some good research studies that may or may not provide evidence for those theories, and conclude that there is no definitive evidence to prove either and both approaches have some merit requiring further investigation.

  2. Maybe you could talk about the interrelationship of the mind and body in treating anxiety?  For example cognitive exercises may alleviate the biological symptoms of anxiety and vice versa.

In my opinion the most powerful way to treat many conditions, in particular anxiety, is using the power of the mind (perhaps cognitive, perhaps hypnosis), as these kinds of therapies teach the patient to learn ways to deal with and hopefully eliminate the cause.  Medication and other natural remedies do have their place and should be used in conjunction with cognitive techniques, however, I pose this question; What is better, a pill to calm someone down for a few hours? Or cognitive exercises/thought re-programming, which will last forever (as long as they are adopted by the subject).

I'm sure if you find a few good books on cognitive psychology, anxiety and medicine, you will find lots of evidence to support theories such as mine.

    Hope this inspires/helps you.

  3. You can definately refer to my blog.
