Question:

Approx. Saddle Size?

I'm definantly planning to get it properly fitted to me and horse but I'm just curious for approx sizes (this is for english all purpose saddle).

What gullet size? 16hh thoroughbred (I am also looking into interchangable gullet, depends on how pricey they are, I'm not going all out, just a cheap good saddle that fits).

Seat size? I'm 5'6 (roughly 167cm), 120 pounds (55kg), 15 years old (I've stopped growing), about women's Australian size 10 (US 6) in pants, outside leg hip to floor 36in (91cm), inside leg 29in (74cm).

I'm just looking for rough sizes, personal experience etc. I'm still going to get it fitted and try it out etc. I know the best way for seat size is to sit in one, I will, when I get the saddle (please don't tell me all that).

Thx!

  1. If you get the changeable gullet you will easily be able to find out what size. If your TB has high withers it will most likely take a narrow tree. If he has moderate wither he should ride a medium just fine.

You will prob need a 16.5/17/17.5 [ Im the same height and weigh 122 pounds and I have used all three but would prob be most comfortable in a 17"]

Wintec is about $400-500 new and is made by Bates so it has the changeable gullet and same design but is synthetic so it is affordable and low maintenance.

Bates is about $1200-$1800 new depending on where you buy it. It has high quality leather and wonderful resale if you must sell it. Heres a link to the cheapest I have seen it [but it is in euros so you must convert the price to where you live]

Also, some Collegiate saddles make changeable gullets but honestly if I were you I would be buying Bates.

Heres a few links to some I found for you new and used! Good luck:

  3. I am about the same size, I ride in a 16.5, though i use a fairly small saddle so my sister can ride in it too. You might be comfortable in anything up to a 17.5.

  4. gullet size will totally depend on how your horse is built, it has nothing to do with his height or breed. If you have a decent saddler in your area, make a tracing of his withers  (bend a wire coat hanger over his withers, then trace that onto paper) and take it to to them, they can tell roughly what size will fit.

I really like some of the interchangeable gullet saddles, get one if you can!

I'll guess your seat size at about 16.5
