  1. For weekly car rentals in Italy, I have rented from www.1800flyeurope.com or www.autoeurope.com from the U.S. many times.  For a manual economy car with AC, we usually pay about US$300.  This price assumes you are picking up the car at an airport.  If you are a little more adventurous, you can save the14% airport tax and pick up the car at a train station or city location.  This price includes full, no deductible insurance - which comes in VERY handy when you forget to fold your mirror in while parallel parked and someone breaks it off :-)

There are no problems renting to Americans.  You can get an automatic, but you'll pay MUCH more.  They drive on the right side of the road, just considerably faster than we drive in the U.S. :-)  You can get the Michelin Italy maps at your local bookstore or Amazon.com.  I highly recommend renting a car in Italy as it is a unique way to see the beautiful countryside that exists beyond Rome, Florence, and Venice.  It IS more expensive than traveling by train, when you consider the price of gas and tolls, but more rewarding.  To save cash, request a diesel car as diesel in Italy is MUCH cheaper than Unleaded - about (€1.09 per liter vs. €1.30 per liter).

    Buon viaggio!

  2. I dont know much as i have never been there, but my mother came back a few months ago.

the actual rental of the car isnt very much.  but there are italian regulations making you buy additional insurance and things like it which add up.  Also dont forget the large tax they place on gas...i think their prices are equivalent to 7 dollars a gallon US

  3. The answer to all of your questions is yes as long as you get  a car at the airport. Check out your destination city's airport and find out what agencies are there.

  4. Of course they rent to an American with no problems, your license is valid there, they rent automatics; however, most cars are manuel, they drive on the same side of the road we drive on.  The street signs are a lot different so that is difficult and they drive very fast.  It is very cheap to rent a car the gas is a bit expensive.  Have fun, Italy is beautiful.
