Male lions generally control a pride for between two and three years. A lone male will usually only be able to hold a pride for a short time, which is why they form coalitions - between two and four males is the most common. More males does not necessarily mean a longer tenure, since persistent invaders may wear them down until they drive them away, or even kill some of them off in repeated attacks until they are able to take over.
