Apriority broke his 5 race losing streak when he won the Grade 3 Mr. Prospector by a nose
The 5-year-old Donald Dizney’s homebred, Apriority, capped off 2011 with a win in the Grade 3, $100,000 Mr. Prospector at Gulfstream Park after a thriller, on 31 December, 2011.
Under jockey L Saez, Apriority stumbled in the beginning of the race, but quickly overcame it and with immense talent and ability, the experienced runner was able to get into contention to run down the pace setter, Zero Rate Policy, and out finished the rampant colt by a mere nose.
Trained By David Fawkes, Apriority is the Florida bred son of Grand Slam, out of mare Midway Squall by Storm Bird.
The newly turned 5-year-old snapped his 5 race losing streak by winning the Mr. Prospector.
The last race he won was an optional claimer on 5 March, 2011, at Gulfstream Park, going over a distance of six and a half furlongs.
He then turned in two runner up finishes in the Grade 1 Carter Handicap at Aqueduct on 9 April, 2011, going over a distance of seven furlongs to winner Morning Line, and then in the Grade 2 Churchill Downs Stakes to winner, Aikenite, at about seven furlongs on dirt, at Churchill Downs.
The rest of the three races were grade 1 in status, and Apriority didn’t even manage a placed finish in any one of those, ranging from Grade 1 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap, Grade 1 Vosburgh and the all important Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint, where he finished sixth.
In the Mr. Prospector, Apriority, broke from post number 1, stumbled to his knees, quickly recovered and got himself into contention, while racing in fourth position till the half mile marker in a field of seven 3-year-old and above males, going over a distance of six furlongs on dirt.
Immortal Eyes and The Hunk pressed the pace, while sent off as the 7 to 1, Zero Rate Policy, pulled away from his two rivals to head straight for the wire, but on the inside, Apriority was gearing up to one of his menacing bursts down the stretch.
He needed the entire stretch, and he got the entire stretch to run down Zero Rate Policy, doing so in style by downing the lucrative pace setter by a nose and covering the distance in 1 minute and 9.28 seconds.
