I got a new thermometer for my aquarium that has chiclids, the temp says 59 f. but my other said 82f before i stepped on it yesterday. the water feels the same, but when i ran it under water the water was HOT when I meausured it to 80 out of the sink. my fish are fine so is the thermeter bad? It said the air temp in my house was 52, so im assuming its wrong, im just worried about my fish.

  1. of course the thermometer is wrong???

how could you even think it was right for a second?

go get a better one, i use glass thermometers and i haven't had a problem in 20 years.

    glass thermometers are only 4$

  2. if you are sitting shivering in your house at 52f then it's right-otherwise it's very wrong-take it back to the shop and get another one.

  3. Room temperature and water temperature are not the same. If your room temperature is 52, then 59F should be the correct temperature for your aquarium. The reason that the other thermometer is 82F could due to "You were holding it".

I would recommend you to go to the petstore and buy a digital thermometer. It is like a tape that can be sticked on the glass tank, when it is 82F your thermometer will show a GREEN COLOR rectangle on the 82F. It is very easy to read, just stick it on the outside of your tank and it is removable. It costs about $2.50

  4. Your thermometer is wrong hun.

Go get another one, preferably one that floats in the tank.  Not one that sticks on the side of the glass.  These are not accurate at all and will pick up not only a few degrees cooler due to the aquarium itself, but also the ambient room temperature.
