Question:

Aquarium Salt Question?

I am thinking of getting some Dward Sunset Coral Platys and Rasbora Hets, I believe both of these require aquarium salt.

Do I need to constantly add the salt in? The reason I am mainly asking this is becuase I have 1 Apple Snail, and 2 Asolene Spixi Snails in the tank. I also have 3 Peppered Corys.

Will the salt kill them?

  1. No salt! Corydoras can't tolerate much salt at all!

    EDIT:

I'd say the platys could live without it. The only reason to put salt in is if there is an Ich breakout or an assistance for recovery. Also, it's a good remedy for fin rot. Anyway, don't listen to the people at PetSmart, they will tell you a goldfish, the waste making machine,  can live in a 3 gallon bowl with no filter. Yeah right...HAH.

  2. None of those fish need salt, save your money.  Salt in aquariums is an old cure for nitrites in your aquarium, used before cycling and the nitrogen cycle was understood.

    ***Edit To Add***

Don't listen to Petsmart.  Getting pet advice from them is like getting dietary advice from the kid at McDonalds.

  3. These are Tropical freshwater fish & do not require salt. If you decide to use freshwater salt, use sparingly as it is known to make tanks foggy and  combined with high temp. will make water bubbly.
