There is a tale that is used to show exponential growth about a king unknowingly granting the request of someone he was rewarding with 1 grain the first day, 2 the second, 4 the third, etc. I can't seem to find what tale it is in in "The Arabian Nights" or "1,001 Nights." Does anyone know? I'm aware that there are also versions in India, China, etc. but was told it was in this literature collection? (I'm not sure if this version would include the chessboard part though, with the 64 squares being covered).

  1. It's called "A thousand and one Arabian Nights"

I watched it a month ago.

  2. I'm not sure that it was ever part of some tale so much as perhaps just a short fable which math teachers like to repeat.  (Maybe it was made up in the last 60 years?)

The version I heard was set in Medieval Europe, with rice being placed on the 64 squares of a chess board.
