Aramis Ramirez bids farewell to the Chicago Cubs – MLB News
The Chicago Cubs’ third baseman Aramis Ramirez bade farewell to his team on Wednesday, November 2 as he decided not to exercise his mutual option of 16-million-dollars. Although the club had exercised their part of the mutual contract in the player’s favour,
Ramirez declined it.
Instead the third baseman will now test the free agent market. The decision might not have come as a surprise to the new management being led by the club’s president of operations Theo Epstein who took the opportunity to pay glowing tributes to the player
for having served the Chicago Cubs.
Wishing him a good future ahead, he hopes Ramirez will get a good offer while the Cubs will start looking for options available to them.
"He had a terrific career with the Cubs," Epstein said. "We certainly wish him well in the future. I wouldn't rule anything out, but given his position as the top free-agent third baseman.”
He stated and hoped that there was a likelihood that he may get a new contract that will appeal to him.
Jed Hoyer, the newly appointed general manager, on the other hand, commented that the team will rather bring a player that complements the side and does not become a force that has to be solely relied upon.
"The key to free agency is always making sure you're paying for future performance," Hoyer said Tuesday. "There's no reason to pay for someone's resume.”
As Aramis Ramirez bids farewell, with the former team manager Mike Quade being dismissed, there are big changes that the Chicago Cubs are expected to undergo in the days to come. The Cubs could hardly win any laurels from fans and critics alike in the 2011
regular season.
With Aramis Ramirez leaving the team, having had a .284 average with 284 home-runs to his credit and 1,788 hits, scoring 873 runs it remains to be seen who the Cubs bring in the team in the absence of this talented player. A lot, for sure, will depend on
the right selection of the player.
