Aramis Ramirez shines as Chicago Cubs defeat Cincinnati Reds 4-3 - MLB Update
Chicago Cubs’ third baseman, Aramis Ramirez had a tremendous day with the bat as he hit two RBIs including a solo walk and went 1-for-2 with an average of .308 in the Cubs’ 4-3 win against Cincinnati Reds at Wrigley Field, Chicago on September 5.
Reds scored one run in the first inning to get a 1-0 lead. Yonder Alonso drove a single-run shot towards centre-field, Drew Stubbs contributed one run for Reds and Jay Bruce occupied second base to end the first inning. The batters failed to show their abilities
during the second and third inning as at third base, Reds’ pitcher Dontrelle Willis popped out and Paul Janish flied out without scoring even a single run.
Similarly, Cubs’ batters were unable to take a run in the third inning as at short-stop position, Geovany Soto grounded out, Matt Garza struck-out and Bryan LaHair flied out to centre-field. The game was tied 1-all at the bottom of fourth inning when Alfonso
Soriano singled to left-field and Starlin Castro scored one run. Ramirez moved to third base and Jeff Baker occupied second base to end the fourth inning.
In the fifth inning, Cubs advanced their lead 4-1 by posting three quick runs. Castro and Reed Johnson both added two runs for the Cubs when Ramirez singled to left-centre. The third run was taken by Ramirez when Baker occupied third base and Soriano moved
to second base on the wild pitch of Willis.
The pitchers controlled runs in the sixth inning. Garza pitched just over seven innings for the Cubs and struck-out eight batters on his 113 pitches. He surrendered six hits, three runs, one earned run and three walks with an ERA of 3.52.
Cubs’ manager, Mike Quade praised Garza and said, “Garza was fantastic. He pitched around a couple of mistakes. He hasn't had many leads and he continues to pitch well. I think (Garza is) a horse. I do. His ERA has been fine.”
Devin Mesoraco was grounded out to short-stop position and Alonso scored a single run in the seventh inning to reduce the Reds’ lead 4-2. During the eighth inning, the Reds further cut their deficit 4-3 when Brandon Phillips added one run and Joey Votto
was safe to reach first base on the error of Cubs’ short-stop, Castro.
Consequently, Cubs were on top with a 1-0 lead in the three-game series at Chicago.
