Aramis Ramirez’s walk off single helps Chicago Cubs defeat San Francisco Giants 2-1 – MLB Update
The Chicago Cubs’ Aramis Ramirez drove in a walk off single to bring his club back into series with 2-1 triumph over defending World Series Champions San Francisco Giants in the third outing of the four-game series, at Wrigley Field, Illinois on Wednesday,
June 29.
Since the Cubs has dropped both ends of yesterday’s split doubleheader for the first time at home since September 30 in 2009, their manager Mike Quade along with other management had an eye on their starter Ryan Dempster to create an out of the box conquest
against the Giants’ strong batting line-up.
Dempster acted as was expected by his team-mates and held the opposing batters to no-score in his eight innings. He allowed just three hits and struck-out six batters without permitting any walk over his 83 complete pitches.
Despite being scoreless and having a desire to finish the game due to low pitch count, Quade replaced Dempster, after he allowed a leadoff double to Pat Burrell, with regular closer Carlos Marmol in the ninth inning. Marmol allowed an RBI single to Emmanuel
Burris and it made Dempster little furious.
Quade was aware of the anger that Dempster showing but he explained it differently when talking to reporters.
He said, "I don't blame him, short of fighting me. It is a whole different animal if the pitch count is higher. That's not going to take away from the performance."
After losing the doubleheader, the Cubs achieved what they were looking for and that is more important than my own win, stated Dempster.
The Cubs too struggled against the Giants’ ace Tim Lincecum but they managed to open their account in the seventh inning when Lincecum has reached to more than 100 pitches. Blake DeWitt drove in a single to the right side of the field to get a 1-0 lead.
It forced the Giants’ manager Bruce Bochy to drop Lincecum in spite of his devastating nine strike-outs over seven innings.
"I felt pretty good. I missed with a couple pitches -- changeup up to Pena, fastball over the plate, up to DeWitt, but other than that I felt like I carried a good rhythm through the game," Lincecum said.
Bochy employed Ramon Ramirez, who tossed eight strikes of his ten pitches but he made a wild pitch to Starlin Castro that ended his game while Jeff Affeldt took his place to complete the eighth inning. Sergio Romo tossed seven strikes of nine pitches but
the two hits he allowed cost him a game defeating blow in the ninth inning.
The Cubs in order to enhance their chances to tie the series 2-all now have scheduled their winning starter Carlos Zambrano to face the Giant’s Matt Cain. According to experts, Zambrano could easily gather his win if he gets some back up from his batting
squad.
