in final qualifying round – Kremlin Cup 2011
Ukrainian Olga Savchuk got rid of the seventh seeded Espanola Arantxa Parra Santonja in the final qualifying round of the Kremlin Cup 2011. The two battled it out on indoor hard courts of the Olympic Stadium, Moscow. It took just
sixty five minutes for the Ukrainian underdog to outshine the seventh seeded Espanola in straight sets of 6-2, 6-2 on Monday the 17th of October 2011.
The first round of the match was inaugurated by Santonja after she had won the service toss and she expertly held her serve to open the scoreboard at 1-0. Savchuk was also successful in holding her service game and placed herself
beside Santonja at 1-1 on the scoreboard. However, Santonja double faulted on her second serve and endorsed a breakpoint to her adversary in the third game. As Savchuk held serve in the fourth game, she took the lead with a 3-1 score.
During the following two games the players broke each other back-to-back and the scoreboard had shifted to a 4-2 score by the end of the sixth game with Savchuk leading the set. Amidst the last two games the unseeded Ukrainian
capitalized on a lucky breakpoint and by the end of the seventh game was looking forward to serving for the opening set. As she held serve in the eighth game, she bagged the opening set with a 6-2 victory.
The second round of the match was kicked off by Santonja and both the players successfully managed to hold their respective service games and by the end of the first two games the scoreboard had tied at 1-1. In the third game Santonja’s
forehand shot went wayward and she ended up endorsing a game to her adversary, who then held her serve to take a lead of 3-1 by the end of the fourth game.
The feat was repeated by Savchuk and as she capitalized on her second break, she had secured her lead at 5-1 on the scoreboard. Now, she was only a game away from the match but in the seventh game she was unable to capitalize on
a break. Nevertheless, as Savchuk held her serve in the eighth game, she smashed a forehand down the T to seal her victory of the match.
The unseeded Ukrainian not only flabbergasted the seventh seeded Santonja but also made it into the main draw of the event.
