Arantxa Parra Santonja thrashes Scarlett Werner
in 2nd qualifying round – Kremlin Cup 2011
Seventh seeded Spaniard Arantxa Parra Santonja bounced back from a set down to score against German Scarlett Werner in the second qualifying round of the Kremlin Cup 2011. The two competitors battled swords on indoor hard courts
of the Olympic Stadium, Moscow. After a speedy one hour and thirty four minutes the seventh seeded Espanola bagged a score of 2-6, 6-1, 6-0 against the unseeded German on Sunday the 16th of October.
Subsequently, after winning the toss Santonja opted to serve first and she got off to a poor start as she was unable to hold her serve in the first game. On the contrary, Werner benefitted from a break point and then held her serve
to take a lead of 2-0.  She further increased her lead to 4-0 by capitalizing on a second break in the third game and also by holding her serve in the fourth game.
It was in the fifth game that Santonja tried to make a comeback by holding her serve and as she capitalized on a breakpoint she reduced the deficit to 2-4. However, in the last two games Werner struck the gold pot by capitalizing
on a break and then holding her serve to steal away the opening set with a 6-2 score.
The second set was initiated by Santonja and this time in a reversal of events she held her serve and then capitalized on a breakpoint to shift the scoreboard with a 2-0 lead. As she held serve for the third game, the score had
further progressed to a 3-0 lead. During the following two games the challengers held serve but it was the first game that Werner bagged and the score had shifted to a 4-1 with Santonja leading.
During the last two games, Werner double faulted on her second serve and endorsed a crucial game to her adversary. After capitalizing on the breakpoint, Santonja was now only a game away from clogging the second set and as she
served for the set, she smashed a marvellous forehand crosscourt and stole the second set with a breadstick victory.
Both the players had managed to bag a set apiece and opening the decisive set was Werner but this time Santonja had taken a notch higher in performance. The Spaniard not only took an advantage from a breakpoint but also held her
serve to take a mini lead of 2-0.
She further increased her lead to 4-0 by repeating the feat. Santonja powered through the remaining set by capitalizing on a break and then with a hold of serve, she sealed a bagel set victory of the third set.
The seventh seed will now be facing Ukrainian Olga Savchuk in the final qualifying round of the Kremlin Cup 2011.
