Arantxa Rus routs Caroline Garcia to reach second qualifying round - Sony Ericsson Open 2012
Dutch tennis player, Arantxa Rus, took the revenge of the Qatar Ladies Open loss 2012 by defeating the 18-years-old French, Caroline Garcia, in a gruelling three-setter. The match was played in the opening qualifying round of the
Sony Ericsson Open. She bounced back a set down to register a 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 triumph.
Rus kicked-off the match with a serve hold and broke serve in the third game to take a lead of 3-1. She won another breakpoint in the fifth game to take a resounding lead of 4-1. It was getting pretty ominous for the French teen,
who clearly looked out of form.
Just a couple of games for the Dutch and her opponent ran away with the first set lead. However, she commenced the second set in grand fashion winning the breakthrough in the second game to take a lead of 2-0. Another comprehensive
serve hold took the lead to 3-0 that was diminished to 4-2 in the following games.
No drama was witnessed in the following games except the trade of breakthroughs that kept the lead of the Dutch player intact. She held her serve to tie the set scores at one apiece and reversed the pressure back on the inferior
ranked teen.
The final set was dismal for the Dutch at the start. She controlled the set after losing an early break; won three breaks on the trot to turnaround the proceedings in her favour. She played extremely well throughout the match and
the French teen couldn’t believe that she lost the match after winning a critical break early in the final set.
Arantxa Rus contests against the Japanese player, Misaki Doi, in the second qualifying round clash of the tournament. Doi registered the biggest upset of the day by ousting the second seed British contestant, Anne Keothavong in
straight sets 6-3, 6-2.
It must have boosted her morale and enough strength to have faith in her capabilities. She is one of the hot favourite players to progress into the main round of the tournament after such a majestic upset.
In another upset of the day, Anastasia Pivovarova of Russia trashed eighth seed Stephanie Dubois, in three-sets.
