Arantxa Sanchez Vicario chosen as the new captain of Spanish Fed Cup team – Tennis News
Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, former world number one from Spain has been provided with an opportunity to serve her nation once again. She is appointed as the new Spanish Fed Cup team captain. Her first challenge is just a month
away (starting from 4th February), when the Spanish Fed Cup team meets Russia’s team in the first round of the World Group.
The initial clause of the contract states that the deal is made for just two years but it will hopefully prolong, provided Vicario is able to repeat the heroics of 1990’s and helps Spain’s Fed Cup team to win yet another
title for their country. The competition is definitely tough, especially from the teams of Soviet Union but there is always a way out if the players stay cool, calm and capitalize on their specialities.
She has represented Spain in the Fed Cup on multiple occasions. She was one of the most influential members in all the five Fed Cup triumphs of Spain; all these victories came in the era of 1990’s. Former world number one
has been crowned champion on four different Grand Slam tournaments in her career, which includes one US Open and three French Open titles.
It will be interesting to see the agenda of 40-years-old retired tennis professional about 2012’s Fed Cup campaign. She has one of the most versatile and talented squad to play with but it all depends on the strategy and
player’s ability to handle the situations pressure with utmost calmness and guile.
1994 proved to be one of her best seasons as she managed to win two Grand Slam titles, including the US Open and her favourite clay-court championship, Roland Garros French Open. On her emphatic achievements in 1994, she
was proclaimed as the best woman tennis player of the year by the ESPN officials.
Vicario’s tennis experience will come into play and her achievements will soon be seen in the results of the tie against Russia. However, her career definitely vows to be on the most outstanding career in the history of tennis.
With 50 wins in singles category and 18 triumphs in doubles, she owns the best record in the Fed Cup history of Spain. Her outstanding career of multiple triumphs lasted for almost 16 years that saw five Fed Cup triumphs for Spain.
Vicario seemed thrilled with her new responsibility and looked to provide results to the Spanish Tennis Federation in February.
