Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario resigns from the captaincy of Spanish Fed Cup team – Tennis News
Former world number one, Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario, has stepped down from the captaincy of Spain’s Fed Cup team after the escalation of row between players and the president of Spanish Tennis Federation, José Luis Escañuela.
The entire Spanish women team has stood against the federation. They have blamed that Escañuela did not fulfil the promises he did with them. All the players have said that they won’t play for the national team until the federation
completes their demands.
Sanchez-Vicario also decided to side with her team rather than the federation and resigned in protest. The four-time Grand Slam winner had accepted the job one year back and she had a year of contract left.
The 41-year-old shared that she did not indulge into the negotiations between players and the federation but she can’t keep quiet and leave her players alone at this moment.
The Spaniard veteran said, "Although I have not been part of any meeting between players or contract talks, I cannot ignore most of the players and stay on the sidelines."
Spanish team comprised of Silvia Soler-Espinosa, Lourdes Dominguez-Lino, Arantxa Parra-Santonja and Nuria Llagostera Vives last year. They did not do a good job, losing both ties they played in 2012 and getting relegated to the
World Group II.
However, Sanchez-Vicario affirmed that she did her job with complete responsibility. She revealed that she worked as hard as she used to during her playing days.
She added, "A year ago I eagerly accepted the responsibility of being female Spanish team captain. From the beginning, I tried to do my job with the utmost professionalism, in the same way I did when I was a player and also tried
to bring my experience."
Spanish Fed Cup team lost 2-3 against Slovak Republic in the World Group playoff tie in April this year. Earlier they were beaten 2-3 by the star studded Russian team in the first round of the World Group.
Now, Spanish team’s next assignment is their first round tie against Ukraine in the World Group II next year. The tie will be held on the red clay courts of Club Atlético Montemar in Alicante, Spain.
