Aravane Rezai cripples Tornado Alicia Black in qualifiers – Citi Open 2012
Qualifying top seed, Aravane Rezai, slaughtered the local wildcard entrant, Tornado Alicia Black, with a breadstick at the Citi Open 2012 on Friday. She jolted down a 6-1, 6-2 victory against the 14-year-old to secure a spot in the final qualifying round
at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International tournament held in Washington D.C, United States.
Rezai brought her experience into handy to oust the local teenager in their first battle against each other. After bagging the match in 47 minutes, the French comfortably secured a spot in the final qualifying round at this outdoor hard court tournament
taking place from July 28th to August 5th.
The 25-year-old stormed into the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center. She drew the first blood in the second game and took a 2-0 lead. Despite failing to save the lone breakpoint she faced, Rezai unleashed barrage of groundstrokes and stroke out the last
four games in a row. She cashed in half of the six break chances to pull out the opener with a breadstick.
Ranked 129th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Rezai kept momentum rolling in the following set. After Alicia Black held her serve in the third game, the French blasted massive forehands and reeled off the following five games successively. She was
never threatened with any hindrance and capitalised on two out of three break chances to record a 6-2 success.
All in all, the Swiss resident clobbered a lower first serve share of 51 per cent as opposed to her rival’s 58 per cent. However, she impressively marked 16 out of 21 points on it. Rezai also sought nine break chances and capped the match with 55 points.
Next in queue for Rezai is the local contestant, Chieh-Yu Hsu, who upset sixth seeded Tamaryn Hendler in straight sets to set up this outing.
The eighth seed, Jennifer Elie, also pocketed a breadstick in her match against her compatriot, Simone Kalhorn. The world number 350 lost her serve once but capitalised on five out of seven break chances, subsequently sealing the deal with a 6-2, 6-1 score
line. She also produced a better first serve share and tremendously clicked 23 out of 32 points on it.
