Arbitration panel receives salary figures from Pittsburgh Pirates and Ross Ohlendorf
The situation looks grim with the Pittsburgh Pirates at the moment. Their financial woes appear to be growing and it comes as no surprise that a situation like this has come up.
The team is looking for a way to excel in the National League Central division and their situation could look to get even worse as there may be arbitration trouble creeping up the account books.
The Pirates are locked in battle with pitcher, Ross Ohlendorf, over salary dues and there is a problem erupting in the background. While there was a show of unity and faith in the Pirates’ FanFest, it seems there are divisions coming to the forefront.
The pitcher has been looking for a raise and there has been little compliance from the team, so far. Pittsburgh and Ohlendorf take the first pitch with an arbitration panel this year and they become the leaders in Major League Baseball with the discourse.
The Pirates are offering Ohlendorf $1.4 million. The situation, however, is amiss as Ohlendorf’s legal representatives are asking for $2.025 million. The beauty of the conflict is that there is no other option than the two figures mentioned here.
The panel will have to choose one and that is something the Pirates will need to add to their cost books as Ross’s previous year salary was $439,000.
Ohlendorf has done little in 2010 to showcase his ability on the forefront. He’s won just one game for the team, while losing 11 in 21 starts. His earning runs average was 4.07 and this year doesn’t look bright for the ace pitcher.
"It made for a season that wasn't very fun, only getting one win", Ohlendorf said. "But I don't evaluate myself on the record so much as on other things. I'm really excited about (the 2011) season. I'm looking forward to getting back out there so the negative
parts of 2010 can kind of go away".
One of the problems last year, was Ross’ back and shoulder injuries that had taken time to develop over the months. The pain restricted his performance on the mound. Nevertheless, it will now be interesting to see how he will fare in 2011 when the new season
kicks off.
