Question:

Arch Support for Skates?

Hi. I've pronation and plantar fasciitis and tendinitis. I need arch supports OTC, but am not sure which to go with. My skates are narrow (as with all kinda of skates). Which kind of arch support should I go for? The oval kind that you stick in the arch area? Half insole? Full insole? The rink guy didn't do a great mounting, but I wouldn't change it since I've gotten used to it. I just am able to skate on my inside edge and go straight on my left leg. Edges aren't that much a problem. I've learnt to control it. I need supports because it hurts after skating.

  1. You need superfeet or an orthotic from like a running store.  There are also places like The Good Feet store that sell stock orthotics and custom orthotics.  If your foot has stopped growing, go with custom.  Do not use anything other than a full insole.

There are 3 things that you can do that help with pronation (most people with narrow feet also have flat feet and this is a common problem).

First is the placement of the blade - if your blade isn't mounted all the way to the inside of the boot, have it moved.  You'll get used to it easily because you won't have to try and compensate.

Second is the use of the orthotic with a really good arch support.

Third is to have a lift placed between the boot and blade on the inside of the foot - this pushes the foot back up straighter when it wants to fall inward.

My daughter has very narrow flat feet and pronates the most I have ever seen - I have used all 3 'fixes' on her skates.
