The house is Victorian and this inlet contraption is historic. It is at ankle level, quite bulky and can get knocked. This is turn knocks out the electricity supply. Repositioning it is a dicey business. The house was renovated and re-wired about 10 years ago, but this contraption has been left untouched, perhaps because it was too costly to replace? Am I, as the householder, solely responsible for the cost of bringing this system up to date?

  1. Yes you are, it should have been replaced during the rewire, perhaps it was to much bother.

  2. Sound like a metal supplier's intake. You cannot touch it; it belongs to your distribution company. If you pay; then they will replace it.

  3. If you are referring to the main fuses or cut-outs on the supply cable before the meter, then your electricity supplier should replace them for free if they are outdated and potentially dangerous.

  4. I am afraid it is your problem. It is known as a consumer box and it is a job for a qualified electrician to sort. at a guess I would think about £150 for a new unit, ( to include new fuses, and whatever an electrician estimates.
