Archarcharch retires following surgery for the condylar fracture suffered during the Kentucky Derby
Trainer, Jinks, and rider, Jon Court, go through an emotional turmoil as their first Derby experience turns into a nightmare. Archarcharch was reported to have a surgery for his condylar fracture that he had in his foreleg during the Kentucky Derby. The
surgery took place at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington but the injury did hold a bad omen as it resulted in the cessation of Archarcharch’s racing career. His owner told that the colt might never make it to racing again.
Val Yagos, the colt’s co-owner, informed fans on her Facebook page that a decision to retire the colt has been taken.
She wrote “Archarcharch made it through surgery like a champ. His racing career is over. Too much damage but he is good and that is what is important.”
He was scheduled to leave Churchill Downs before noon for the Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington
Archarcharch got injured while he was running in the May 7, 2011, Kentucky Derby. The colt was injured during the final yards of the 1 ¼ mile race.
His X-rays revealed that the colt had sustained a stress fracture to his left foreleg. The veterinarian doctor, Larry Bramlage, told that the colt’s injury was not life threatening.
The 3-year-old was trained by the 70-year-old William Jinks Fires and ridden by his son in law, Jon Court.
The two have worked at Churchill Downs for years and this was their first Derby appearance.
Jinks said, "He got banged coming out of the gate and kind of knuckled over there at the crown of the track, I told my wife that I didn't like the way he was moving when he passed us the first time, and you hope you are wrong about that".
He added that the jockey’s saddle slipped so the colt bumped again and Archarcharch struggled over the dirt surface at Churchill Downs. He ended up having the fifteenth place.
William is of the view that the colt might have received the injury while he was stepping out of the gate.
He was considered a favourite for the race as he had got hold of a spectacular win in the Arkansas Derby, held on April 16, 2011.
The Robert and Loval Yagos owned colt has earned $832,744. He was bought by Robert Yagos for $60,000 in the 2009 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.
Archarcharch has a career record of three wins from seven starts. His wins include the Southwest Stakes held on February 21, 2011. This was the colt’s first graded win.
He was bred in Kentucky by Grapestock LLC and is out of Woodman’s Mare and Woodman’s Dancer, sharing lineage with stakes winner, Run Sully Run.
