Archbishop McCarthy’s boys volleyball team defeats Spanish River on Friday
The Archbishop McCarthy’s boys volleyball team was able to give themselves another win by defeating Spanish River in a match held on Friday.
The thrilling competition between the two teams went on for five long sets, with the last set of the quarterfinal bagged by the Mavericks.
As the Mavericks were celebrating their hard fought win by jumping with joy and the Sharks were heading out of the gym of St. Andrew’s cradling their disappointment, the scoreboard read 25-14, 28-30, 25-15, 27-29 and 19-17.
With their recent win, the Mavericks have been able to improve their number of overall season victories to a figure of 28. They have been able to achieve this impressive amount at the cost of suffering no loss at all so far.
In contrast to this, the Sharks have had a good record themselves, but one that falls pale to that of the Mavericks. The number of times that the Sharks have been able to register wins in this season so far total to be 25. These wins have been bagged at
the cost of undergoing defeats that amount to be four in all.
The start of the first set saw the Mavericks take control by taking a quick lead. This put the pressure on the Sharks from the beginning of the match. As the set progressed, the Mavericks were able to extend their advantage while the Sharks kept trailing
behind them. It did not take the Mavericks a long time to finish off the first set of the game at 25-14.
After losing the first set of the game by such a margin the Sharks were determined to step up in the second set. They were able to rally together and give the Mavericks a significant amount of challenge. The game went back and forth between the Sharks and
the Mavericks. Until the end of the set, no one was sure where the table4s would turn. Eventually, the Sharks managed to break free and seal the deal on the second set of the game at 30-28.
The third set started off much the same way as the first one. It seemed as if the Sharks had burned out in the previous set as their effort seemed half-hearted. The Mavericks had no trouble in controlling the game and finally securing the set at 25-15.
The Sharks were able to come out rejuvenated in the fourth set and took it for themselves at 29-27, taking the game to a fifth one. The fifth set however, was bagged by the Mavericks at 19-17.
“We couldn't stop them,” Sharks coach Karen Adams said. “But I can't say enough about my kids. I told them they'd have to fight for every point and they did, they fought for it. It was good that everyone else got a chance to see that too, because they didn't
expect that out of us.”
