Do you really have to go to 4 years of field school or can you just volunteer to go on expeditions?

  1. Four years of field school? No, that does not sound right, but a field school, which is usually 4-6 weeks, is a common requirement for going on digs. There are very few places that I know of that will accept volunteers with no previous experience - then they would have to train you. After taking a field school you can probably find other digs to volunteer for. Places to check for fields schools and volunteer digs are listed below.

  2. There's several ways to volunteer and get experience. However they won't replace time in the classroom and course credits

  3. most archaeologists r not in the field but rather in a classrooms teaching.

  4. 4 years of SCHOOL to get a BA or BSc majoring in archaeology... fieldschool is usually up to a semester long (2-3 months)...

but its absolutely possible to volunteer to go on expeditions, however its usually costly... its looked at as a vacation, a touristy form of archaeology... will doing that alone make you an archaeologist? no, not one that could get a job...
