Let's say it's a mild night at The Garden about 1953 with Robinson coming in at 167 lbs and the Ol' Mongoose the 175 lb limit. 15 rounds for the Light heavyweight title. Who wins this dream fight?

  1. Everyone expected Hagler to beat Ray Leonard, and Ray flurried and ran to a decision over a bigger, stronger Hagler.  Could Ray Robinson do the same......of course, but the question is would he.  Sugar Ray Robinson wasn't a runner, he was a fighter, and that would be the difference.  Robinson would fight Archie Moore, not flurry and run and it would make for a terrific fight, but in boxing size does play a role.  I think Archie Moore would give Ray Robinson more trouble than Joey Maxim, and Ray couldn't close the show with Maxim, so Moore would most likely have enough to at the very least duplicate Maxim's effort.

My mind says Archie Moore by decision, but my heart will always be with Sugar Ray Robinson.  Great match up.

  2. ageless archie is too strong for the sugar man...gotta agree with the guys above me.

  3. ericktravel makes some very good points and as is often said on this forum the great big man beats the great smaller man.  This would be a very close fight that goes the distance with Moore taking a close but unanimous decision.

  4. archie moore in 12 rounds

  5. This is an interesting match up,despite robinson's gifted abilty moore would prove to be a tough opponent due to his power and ability to absorb punches (especially from a middleweight) the only way robinson would win this fight would be by decision and personally i think this is possible, after all charley burley managed to earn a decision from moore and moore was unable to knock burley out.....personally i have always felt that burley was better than robinson however i think robinson had the chin and the stamina to go all the way and out box moore who despite his great power and stamina, was a lot slower than robinson and not quick enough to counter robinson's punches however moore always has a puncher's chance, because moore was guy accustomed to knocking out light heavyweights and robinson would definetely feel it if he got hit one time too many, once again great question my friend.

  6. Since you have them fighting at different weights, not saying what if they were both 160 or something else, you have to know Archie would win this fight.

He would be too strong for Ray to last 15 rounds.

There is no way a middle weight could stay with Moore even if he was the best pound for pound boxer in history.

  7. The primed Mongoose?  The Mongoose that everyone avoided until he turned 35?

God bless Sugar Ray, because he'll need it.  Moore would KO him fairly quickly.  Nothing personal, but Archie was by far the best LH ever.
