I need to pump water upto a height of 15cm and it a bucket(500ml)...

I tired a vaccuum pump but it didnt work very well. so i am planning to try archimedes' s***w. please give me all the required dimensions i will be needing to do so...like angle of inclination, length of tube, how deep should the tube be immersed in water (15l bucket)

  1. Some useful design math with dimensional and angle suggestions is given in the ref. There is no required angle of inclination but there is a maximum; you have to be sure that it's not so high relative to the s***w pitch that the water runs down the s***w. You don't want the end fully immersed; there has to be some air taken in or the s***w will be totally water-filled and won't work.

One interesting point the ref. brings up is that the s***w "does not necessarily need to turn inside the casing, but can be allowed to turn with it in one piece." This might result in a s***w that is easier to make, less leaky and more durable.

  2. The angle of inclination is 45 degrees. the length of the tube is going to be as long as you need it to reach from the water source to where it is going to need to empty out. It needs to be immersed in the water far enough so that when the s***w turns over it remains under water.
