Question:

Architecture or Stockbroker??

Hi.

I am very interested in designing infrastructure (infrastructure being bridges, airports, etc. Anything big really) and tall buildings ( over 150m) but I'm also very interested in becoming stockbroker in the City of London or New York.

If anyone is one of these professions, could they tell me their experience and it would help me on choosing my preferred option.

For example the ups and downs of the job.

Thanks very much, Stephen

  1. Well, do you want an honest profession?   Then become an architect.

Stock brokers are basically salespeople and as such telling the truth is not at the top of their list of traits.

Those two professions are almost as far apart as brain surgeon and garbage collector.

One thing I'd recommend you do is an "informational interview" with an architect, and if you insist, with a stock broker.   Maybe even more than one of each if you can find them.    Most people love to talk about what they do, especially if they enjoy the work and find it fulfilling, so don't shy away from this step - you won't regret it once you start down one of those two roads, as having some "inside" information will help bolster your confidence that you made the right choice.

(and BTW, if you DO choose to be a broker, stay AWAY from inside information from that point on!  ;-) )

  2. if you want money, stockbroker, architecture is a career you can gain alot of satisfaction from but the time it takes to qualify isnt worth the salary unless you become famous
