architecturally speaking, how do you define "public" and "private" space?

robert krier (architect and theorist) defines a "true city" as a hybrid between "public" and "private" space. what's a "true city" and what do you make of it?

  1. Excellent question!  Public space is space used by multiple people, families, and the general public (sorry I hate using the question in the answer) and is generally open to everyone. Private space is secluded to certain individuals, companies, groups, or families.  There's also some intermediate spaces like front porches or shopping malls.  Different city plans have different ways of setting boundaries defining these spaces, i.e. walls, shrubs, intermediate spaces.

A true city must have both public and private spaces.  Private homes, business, clubs, etc. and public parks, streets, etc. so I have to agree with Krier.
