architecturally speaking, how do you define "public" and "private" space?

robert krier (architect and theorist) defines a "true city" as a hybrid between "public" and "private" space. what's a "true city" and what do you make of it?

  1. Public space....hallways between apartments, lobbies, parks, sidewalks, elevators, that sort of stuff.

Private, the inside of peoples apartments, and private balconies, atached just to their apartment (not shared with other apartments).

I'd say a "true city" is a place like Chicago, New York, Hong Kong, ect.

Cities like Los Angeles, which are so vastly spread out, don't qualify as a "true city" in my mind.
