Are 2x8's strong enough to reinforce an attic bathroom floor?

I recently moved into a new house and I have an unfinshed attic that I want to turn into a room with a bathroom. It looks like there are 2x8's on the floor of the attic. Is this strong enough for a bathroom floor that will have a bathtub in it?

  1. dependes on the span, 10' is max

If more than 10' the cheapest way to correct is scab a 2x8 on the existing ones

  2. check this attached floor span tables:

    http://www.wwpa.org/techguide/pdf/floor....

most 2x8 from a box store is #2, and 14' span is a bit long.

2x8 spans more in the 11'-12' range. you will need to find the

max. span that is unsupported by a wall on the floor below the attic, and judge  accordingly.

    Hope that helps.

  3. if it is #1 southern yellow pine and it is spaced at 16" and the span (meaning the space between supports like wall to wall) is less than 14' then you should be ok.
