I am staying in a hotel for 30 consecutive nights in a hotel in Michigan. A guest told me that if you stay for over 30 consecutive nights, tax is not charged. Anyone else know anything about this?

  1. For short stays, you can be charged transient occupancy tax.  At some point it becomes long term and not taxable.  Ask at the hotel what the local procedure is.

  2. Occupancy tax exemption is determined by the county you are staying in.  Consult the county website or the hotel.  The keyword is consecutive.  You must stay the required amount of nights consecutively...if you do not then you will be charged the full amount of tax.  This is not retroactive either.  You cannot stay 100 nights...take a weekend....then come back and be occupancy tax exempt.  I would call a Homewood Suites or Residence Inn for the answer if your hotel doesn't know.  Those two residential style hotels deal a lot with occupancy tax issues.

    Hope this helps!!
