Are ALL cheerleaders popular in high school?

I was just wondering...is it true that if you become a cheerleader you automatically become popular? Is it also true that they're all mean and S****y? and is it true that they think they're all better than everybody else? and like, to join cheer leading do you have to try out (like make your own moves?), or does the cheer team make up a dance and you have to copy it down perfectly? I would like more info about cheerleaders and their status and high school please.

  1.  You could say that you can still be "popular" without being a cheerleader, you just have to fit in with the majority! the cliques!  Cheerleading itself won't make you popular, it will make your muscles ache! Point is, what you do with your actions though, will matter.  If you become a cheerleader and tells everybody about it of course they will be interested, or they might judge you (either in a good or bad way) according to their OWN STEREOTYPING (e.g. cheerleaders are snotty, cheerleaders are easy...etcetcetc).  Many girls who join the squad become arrogant because it's like wearing a new shiny label, which is again all to do with stereotyping!  And the sluttiness goes with that too.  It's like a vicious cycle.   I know this because admittedly, I've been through that stage...I became like that after I joined cheerleading when I was younger.  Then now, I'm 20...and I realised that it was meaningless and that I should change into a better self.  I'm still cheerleading, but now I'm more into the activity itself rather than focusing on being at the top of the social ladder....then I met new cheerleaders and I realised that we are all the same to normal humans!  People who knows me look at me in a different light now...and people who don't know me will still think I am whatever they think about cheerleaders, that's coz they don't know me!  In conclusion, people cannot end stereotyping, but one could choose how to act upon it!!

As for tryouts, it really depends on the school.  In my uni, we had a "taster session" which allows anyone interested to take part in stunting and basic cheers.  Then we have the try outs:  In the first try out, we got taught a routine and we had 2-3 days practice til the day they eliminate people.   Then we have a session of stunting (they said they won't eliminate anyone on that day, but we still tried our very best coz you never know they might be picking on people already!) and then on the second try out day they will make us do our routine like 50 times to see who's fit enough and who screws up..etc.   However, other schools/uni's are different some of them would require tumbling, which wasn't required in our varsity squad, and some others would require a basic dance/cheer from you.  Get in touch with them and ask!  If you are really keen, visit http://www.zoodance.co.uk/apps/videos/

    Hope this helps! xx
